If you’ve ever dreamed of scuba diving but felt held back by fear of deep water, you are not alone.
Many of my students come to me with this exact goal. They want to explore the ocean, travel with loved ones, and enjoy water fully — but the open water swim requirement feels intimidating.
I want you to know something important:
You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to begin scuba diving. You just need the right guidance, the right mindset, and the right support.
Because confidence in water isn’t something you’re born with — it’s something you build.
And I’m here to guide you.
What Are the Open Water Swim Requirements?
Most scuba certification programs require two simple water comfort skills:
- Swim 200 meters continuously (no time limit, any stroke)
- Float or tread water for 10 minutes
There’s no race. No pressure. No perfect technique required.
These skills are simply there to ensure you can stay calm and safe in the water.
In reality, scuba diving itself feels very different. Your equipment supports your body, and the experience is often more peaceful than swimming on the surface.
What This Requirement Is Really Testing
It’s not testing your strength.
It’s testing your comfort.
Because when you feel calm in water, everything changes — your breathing slows, your body relaxes, and movement becomes easier and more natural.
This is the foundation of everything I teach.
My Approach: Helping You Find Your Flow in Water
Hi I’m Grace.
I founded Swim With Grace because I was once the person who felt afraid, stuck, and unsure in water, but when I learned how to work with my body instead of against it, everything changed. Now, after 7+ years teaching in community and independent swim schools, I help adults break free from that same fear and discover freedom in water.
My mission is simple: To help you build water confidence at your own pace, in a way that feels safe, supportive, and empowering.
Here’s how I help you prepare for open water and beyond:
1. We start with floating — the true foundation
Floating is the turning point. When you learn to trust the water, you stop fighting it. Your body naturally becomes lighter, calmer, and more supported.
This is when fear begins to fade.
2. We build confidence in small, achievable steps
You don’t need to swim 200 meters on day one.
We begin with what feels manageable. Each step builds on the last, helping you develop confidence naturally.
Many of my students go from fearing the deep end to swimming independently within weeks.
3. We reframe fear as part of the journey
Fear is not failure.
Fear is simply where you begin.
I meet you exactly where you are, and together, we move forward.
4. We prepare you not just to pass — but to enjoy the water
My goal isn’t just for you to complete a swim requirement.
My goal is for you to enjoy the experience.
To feel calm.
To feel capable.
To feel free.
The Moment Everything Changes
There’s a moment I see often.
A student who once held onto the pool edge lets go.
They float.
They breathe.
They smile.
And in that moment, they realize:
“I can do this.”
That’s when swimming transforms from something fearful into something empowering.
Your Scuba Journey Starts Here
If scuba diving is your dream, the swim requirement is not a barrier.
It’s simply the first step.
With the right guidance, you can build the comfort, confidence, and calm you need — not just to pass the requirement, but to truly enjoy the underwater world.
Every great swim journey starts with one small step. I would be honoured to guide you there.
And I promise, the view beneath the surface is worth it.
