Family Day Below the Surface: Diving Porteau Cove with Scuba MUDs

Forget the typical Family Day brunch—this year, we took the “family” vibe to the depths of Howe Sound! Joining the Scuba MUDs (Meet Up Dives Vancouver) for a holiday shore dive at Porteau Cove Provincial Park is the perfect way to embrace the West Coast winter.

Why Porteau Cove for Family Day?

Located just 30 minutes north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway, Porteau Cove is a shore-diving mecca for everyone from fresh Open Water grads to seasoned techies. Here’s what made our holiday dive epic:

  • Winter Clarity: While summer can be murky, February often brings spectacular visibility—sometimes up to 14 metres (40 feet).
  • Wreck Trekking: Navigate the famous artificial reefs, including the Granthall (a sunken barge) and the Centennial (a sailboat hull).
  • Marine Life Meet-ups: It’s lingcod breeding season! We spotted territorial males guarding their egg masses, plus the usual suspects: giant plumose anemones, decorator crabs, and even a shy Giant Pacific Octopus.

Diving with Scuba MUDs

The Scuba MUDs crew is all about community. Whether you’re new to scuba or a pro, the group vibe makes cold-water diving feel warm.

The Logistics
  • Entry: Easy access via concrete stairs at the right side of the parking lot.
  • Facilities: The park is diver-friendly with heated change rooms, outdoor showers, and benches for gear assembly.
  • Fees: Parking is free, though the park has reduced winter hours (7 AM – 11 PM).

Nothing beats swapping dive stories over a thermos of hot cocoa while watching the sunset over Howe Sound. If you’re looking to level up your next long weekend, grab your drysuit and join the MUDs underwater.

Let us know if you spotted any egg-guarding lingcod!
